The work

The kinds of business I would rebuild.

There is no client gallery here yet. Rather than pad this page with someone else's logos, I picked four kinds of business whose websites are actively costing them work, and built one properly for each.

Every project below is self-initiated and unpaid

Independent pub

Screenshots go in here once this concept is built. The frame is already the size they will be.

What it is
A pub in the hills above Leeds, doing food seven days, with a beer garden looking out over the fells and no table booking system.
The problem
The menu was a PDF last changed in 2019. Most of the village has one bar of signal on the top road, so most of the people opening it were stood in the car park holding their phone up to the window, waiting for it to load.
What I did
  • Menu as real text on the page, one file to edit, readable at arm's length.
  • Kitchen hours and last orders above the fold, because that is the question.
  • Booking button that opens the phone dialler on mobile and shows the number on desktop.
  • Sunday roast and the events list given their own addresses, so they can be shared.

Joinery firm

What it is
A two-person joinery outfit. Fitted wardrobes, staircases and kitchens, mostly on referral.
The problem
Everything lived on a Facebook page. The work was good and there was ten years of it, but no way to look through it in order, and nothing that turns up when somebody searches for a joiner.
What I did
  • Twelve jobs as a real gallery, each one with what it cost and how long it took.
  • A quote form that asks for the three things needed to price a job, and nothing else.
  • Service area, insurance and trade registration on the page, not buried in an About.
  • Photographs served at the size they display, so the gallery opens on a site visit.

Leisure and membership Concept - self-initiated

Members' golf club

Screenshots go in here once this concept is built. The frame is already the size they will be.

What it is
A members' club with a waiting list, visitor green fees and a function room to let.
The problem
Joining meant downloading a Word document, printing it, and posting it. The function room is the highest-margin thing the club sells and it was one line on the contact page.
What I did
  • Membership enquiry as a form that lands in the secretary's inbox the same minute.
  • Green fees and visitor rules on one page, as a table, with the dates they change.
  • The function room given its own page with capacities, layouts and what is included.
  • Competition results published from the spreadsheet the club already keeps.

Professional services Concept - self-initiated

Accountancy practice

What it is
A four-person practice doing self-assessment, payroll and limited company accounts.
The problem
A template site with stock photographs of handshakes and no prices anywhere. Every enquiry opened with "how much do you charge", which is a question a website can answer before the phone rings.
What I did
  • Fees published per service, with what is included and what is not.
  • A short qualifying form, so the first call is about the work rather than the basics.
  • The deadlines clients actually miss, kept on one page and dated.
  • Two case-shaped explainers written for people who do not do this for a living.

Being straight about it

What “concept” means here.

It means nobody asked me to build it and nobody paid for it. I picked the business, I wrote the brief, and I made every decision without a client in the room to argue with me.

What that does not tell you

How I handle a client who changes their mind in week three, or a deadline that moves. A concept is a demonstration of craft, not of a working relationship. The only honest way to find that out is to be my client, which is why the first twenty minutes cost you nothing.

What it does tell you

Exactly how I build. The same standards apply here as to paid work: the same performance budget, the same accessibility floor, the same refusal to ship a page that takes six seconds on a phone. What you see is the level, not a showreel of the best bits.

Why not just show templates

Because a template proves nothing about whether the person selling it can think. Each of these starts from a real problem a real kind of business has, and the design is the answer to that problem rather than a layout with the logo swapped out.

The next step

Let's find out if I'm the right fit.

Twenty minutes on the phone. You tell me what isn't working, I tell you what I'd do and what it costs. If it's not me you need, I'll say so.

Or call 07700 900123. I reply within one working day.
