The Bramley Arms from the lane: whitewashed stone, hanging baskets either side of the door, picnic tables in the garden and the fells rising behind — The view most people photograph before they've had a drink.

Getting here

On the Ilkley road above Otley, where the streetlights stop and the walls start. Twenty five minutes by car from the city centre; the 84 stops at the bottom of the lane until half seven.

Parking

A gravel yard behind the pub for about twenty cars, and the top field opens up for match days and bank holidays. Sat nav wants the postcode for the church, not the pub.

The garden

South-facing, heated, dogs anywhere, children until nine. It runs straight into the top field, and on a clear evening you can see three farms and both turbines from the far bench.
